There are several types of backstrokes which may and should be learned. We shall describe only the elementary backstroke. It is a good relief stroke, and it allows a man to rest other muscles while making considerable progress over a long distance if necessary. Beginners and mediocre swimmers find it easy to master. It is stroke of power and endurance. The under water recovery make it possible for the swimmer to use the arms easily even though fully clad. In addition the face is out of the water so there is less breathing problem.
There is danger of depth charge or other underwater explosion, the backstroke should be always be used, as it is the best protection against internal injuries from slock waves of underwater concussions. Either the scissor kick or the frog kick may be used. The frog kick unless a man has definite preference otherwise, is probably best.
